Description Lysine decarboxylase
Catalyzed reaction L-lysine = cadaverine + CO(2).
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate.
Comments -!- Also acts on 5'-hydroxy-L-lysine.
In bacteria, the production of cadaverine by lysine decarboxylase appears to be a mechanism of resistance to acidic pH values.

Several PDB structures (proteins from Arabidopsis and Thermus) are annotated as possible Lys decarboxylases, but the proteins are small and unrelated to the validated PLP-dependent enzymes with this activity.
