Description 2,2-dialkylglycine decarboxylase (pyruvate).
Alternative names alpha-dialkylamino acid transaminase;
L-alanine-alpha-ketobutyrate aminotransferase;
DGD.
Catalyzed reaction 2,2-dialkylglycine + pyruvate = dialkyl ketone + CO(2) + L-alanine.
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate.
Comments -!- Acts on 2-amino-2-methylpropanoate (i.e. 2-methylalanine), 2-amino-2-methylbutanoate and 1-aminocyclopentanecarboxylate.
Mechanistically, dialkylglycine decarboxylase is a very peculiar PLP-dependent enzyme, which catalyzes both decarboxylation and transamination in its normal catalytic cycle.

Enzymes with this activity occur sporadically in bacteria and fungi, but their biological role is unclear.
