4.3.1.17
Description L-serine ammonia-lyase.
Alternative names L-serine dehydratase;
Serine deaminase,
L-hydroxyaminoacid dehydratase;
L-serine deaminase;
L-serine hydro-lyase (deaminating).
Catalyzed reaction L-serine = pyruvate + NH(3).
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate or iron-sulfur cluster.
Comments -!- This reaction is also carried out by L-threonine ammonia-lyase (EC 4.3.1.19) from a number of sources.
-!- The reaction catalyzed probably involves initial elimination of water (hence the enzyme's original classification as EC 4.2.1.13), followed by isomerization and hydrolysis of the product with C-N bond breakage.
-!- Formerly EC 4.2.1.13.
PLP-independent L-serine ammonia-lyases are used by some bacteria.
Prosite PROSITE; PDOC00149;
PDB 1P5J; 1PWH ;
Organisms -Bacteria -Fungi -Metazoa -Human
