B6db activities: 4.4.1.2

4.4.1.2
Description Homocysteine desulfhydrase.
Alternative names Homocysteine desulfurase;
Homocysteine alpha-,gamma-lyase.
Catalyzed reaction L-homocysteine + H(2)O = H(2)S + NH(3) + 2-oxobutanoate.
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate.
Comments The known enzymes catalyzing this reaction (e.g., an enzyme from Trichomonas vaginalis) also possess a substantial methionine gamma-lyase activity.
The corresponding sequences have been therefore grouped in family 4.4.1.11.
Organisms -Bacteria -Metazoa
