Description Aspartate racemase

Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate or no cofactor
Known aspartate racemases from eubacteria are not PLP-dependent. In Archaea, PLP-dependent enzymes have been isolated but not characterized at the molecular level.

Aspartate racemases from metazoa have emerged (apparently multiple times) from ancestral serine racemases (fold-type II).They have been grouped here in two related but phylogenetically distinct families.

A mammalian protein with Fold-type I and related to aspartate aminotransferase had been once attributed an Asp racemase function, but this result has been subsequently questioned.
