Description Aspartate racemase.
Catalyzed reaction L-aspartate = D-aspartate
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate or none
Aspartate racemases from mammals are fold-type I proteins (and have been grouped in family 5.1.1.13_a) whereas aspartate racemases from mollusks are fold-type II (family 6.1.1.13_b).

Known aspartate racemases from eubacteria are not PLP-dependent. In Archaea, PLP-dependent enzymes have been isolateed but not characterized at the molecular level.
