2.6.1.13
Description Ornithine--oxo-acid aminotransferase
Alternative names Ornithine aminotransferase;
Ornithine ketoacid aminotransferase;
Ornithine delta-transaminase;
L-ornithine 5-aminotransferase.
Catalyzed reaction L-ornithine + a 2-oxo acid = L-glutamate 5-semialdehyde + an L-amino acid.
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate.
The enzyme controls the L-ornithine level in tissues by catalysing the transfer of the delta-amino group of ornithine to 2-oxoglutarate.

Fungal enzymes also employ L-lysine as a substrate, yielding L-aminoadipate semialdehyde, a metabolic intermediate that can be used in the biosynthesis of antibiotics.

Diseases Ornithinemia with gyrate atrophy of choroid and retina
Prosite PROSITE; PDOC00519;
PDB 1GBN; 2OAT; 1Z7D; 4ZWM;
Organisms -Eubacteria -Archea -Plants -Fungi -Metazoa -Human
