Description |
L-cysteine desulfurase/desulfhydrase (4.4.1.-) |
Catalyzed reaction |
L-cysteine + [enzyme]-cysteine = L-alanine + [enzyme]-S-sulfanylcysteine
L-Cysteine + H(2)O = pyruvate + H(2)S + NH(3). |
Cofactor |
Pyridoxal-phosphate. |
|
The recombinant protein from Mycoplasma pneumoniae is threefold more active as a desulfurase than as a desulfhydrase, but the desulfhydrase reaction seems important for pathogenesis.
