egte
Description Hercynylcysteine sulfoxide lyase (4.4.1.-)
Alternative names EgtE
Catalyzed reaction hercynylcysteine sulfoxide = ergothioneine + pyruvate + NH3
Cofactor Pyridoxal phosphate.
Comments Ergothioneine is a thiourea derivative of histidine, containing a sulfur atom on the imidazole ring. It is produced by some fungi and bacteria, but it has also been isolated from animal tissues.
In mycobacteria, EgtE has been suggested to catalyze the last step of ergothioneine biosynthesis. The reaction is at the moment hypothetical.
