Description L-cysteine desulfurase/desulfhydrase (4.4.1.-)
Catalyzed reaction L-cysteine + [enzyme]-cysteine = L-alanine + [enzyme]-S-sulfanylcysteine
L-Cysteine + H(2)O = pyruvate + H(2)S + NH(3).
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate.
The recombinant protein from Mycoplasma pneumoniae is threefold more active as a desulfurase than as a desulfhydrase, but the desulfhydrase reaction seems important for pathogenesis.
