Description L-lysine 2-aminotransferase (2.6.1.-)
Catalyzed reaction L-lysine + pyruvate = 2-oxo-6-aminohexanoate + L-alanine.
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate.
Other ketoacids can function as acceptors of the amino group.
Apparently, the 2-oxo-6-aminohexanoate product readily rearranges to a cyclic, dehydrated form, piperideine-2-carboxylate, which is a precursor in the biosynthesis of some antibiotics.
