abstract A partially purified cell-free system was obtained from Nocardia uniformis supsp. tsuyamanensis (ATCC 21806) which exhibits 2 enzymic activities involved in the late stages of nocardicin A biosynthesis, a monocyclic b-lactam antibiotic. The first, a 3-amino-3-carboxypropyl transferase, catalyzes the formation of isonocardicin A from S-adenosylmethionine and nocardicin E, and the second, an epimerase, inverts the C-9' position of isonocardicin A from the L-configuration to the D-configuration to afford nocardicin A. These findings and the earlier demonstration that nocardicin G, the simplest of the 7 known nocardicins, is incorporated intact into nocardicin A, allows a complete biogenetic pathway originating in L-serine and L-(p-hydroxyphenyl)glycine to be proposed.
