2.5.1.47
Activity 2.5.1.47
Description Cysteine synthase
Notes A rather heterogeneous family, strictly related to cystathionine-beta-synthase (EC 4.2.1.22); the plant enzymes are also strictly related to other enzymes involved in secondary metabolism, e.g. cyanoalanine synthase.
Several bacteria contain two enzymes with this activity: O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase A (cysK) and O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase B (cysM). In contrast to O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase A, O-acetylserine sulfhydrylase B is preferentially used for cysteine biosynthesis during anaerobic growth and is able to utilize thiosulfate as a substrate.
