uncharacterized family yhfs
Activity unclassified
Description unclassified activities
Notes Very distinct family of bacterial proteins, built based on Yhfs from E. coli (whose structure is known). Sequences in this family are distantly related to methionine gamma-lyases (family 4.4.1.11) and other C-S lyases, but also to the mocr group of proteins.

Under anaerobiosis, yhfS gene expression is activated by the transcriptional activator FNR. A ΔyhfS mutant has aggravating genetic interactions with genes involved in DNA recombination (source: https://biocyc.org/gene?orgid=ECOLI&id=G7728)

The yhfs genes normally cluster together with genes of the yhfx family (see unclassified_family_yhfx). The connection is particularly evident in firmicutes such as Lactobacillus rhamnosum, Jeotgalibaca dankookensis, Carnobacterium sp AT7.
