| Description |
beta-methyltriptophan aminotransferase (2.6.1.-) |
| Catalyzed reaction |
beta-methyl-L-triptophan + + 2-oxoglutarate = beta-methyl-beta-indole-pyruvate + L-glutamate |
| Cofactor |
Pyridoxal-phosphate |
| Comments |
The physiological reaction occurs in the opposite direction. Can use both stereoisomers of β-methyl-indolepyruvate, producing either (2S,3R)-β-methyltryptophan or (2S,3S)-β-methyltryptophan. It can also act as a tryptophan aminotransferase (EC 2.1.6.27). |

beta-methyltriptophan is a biosynthetic precursor
of bioactive natural products such as maremycin A and B. |
