This family encompasses eukariotic (mitochondrial) and bacterial cysteine desulfurases belonging to the ISC and SUF systems (these systems, devoted to the biosynthesis of iron-sulfur centers also include scaffold proteins, which function as sulfur and iron acceptors, as well as a variable number and type of accessory components).
Homologs of these proteins occur in archaea, but they have not been included here because none of them has been functionally validated.
Proteins in this family are phylogenetically related to selenocysteine lyases (EC 4.4.1.16), and often show some selenocysteine lyase activity.
