Comments -!- The enzyme in erythrocytes is genetically distinct from that in other tissues.
Certain aminolevulinate synthases (e.g., the enzyme from Streptomyces aizunensis) also catalyze the cyclization of ALA-CoA to form 2-amino-3-hydroxycyclopent-2-en-1-one. This five membered ring is a precursor for many secondary metabolites including asukamycin.
