4.1.1.22
Description Histidine decarboxylase
Alternative names HDC.
Catalyzed reaction L-histidine = histamine + CO(2).
Cofactor Pyridoxal-phosphate or Pyruvate.
Comments Enzymes from gram-positive bacteria employ a pyruvoyl cofactor instead of of PLP.

In animals the enzyme is essential for the production of histamine, which plays crucial roles in intercellular communication and inflammatory processes.
The significance of histidine decarboxylase in bacteria is more obscure, but at least in some cases the enzyme represents a virulence factor.
